It’s Electric…but is it also Boogie Woogie Woogie?

June 24, 2009

What holds us back from producing electric cars is not lightweight carbon-fiber bodies, powerful V8 engines, or even research dollars.  One of the most critical factors in producing a vehicle that runs on batteries is…well…just that: energy storage.  As far as I am concerned there needs to be a significant boom in the chemistry and fabrication of energy storage techniques in order for the electric car to work. It was just announced that Tesla Motors will be lent over $465 Million to ” build the electric car”.  Currently two of its profiled vehicles are priced at $50,000 and the other at $100,000, give or take a few hundred.  I’d guess that the average citizen would have a hard time investing in a vehicle based on technologies that are not yet at their peak.  Hopefully Tesla will put their newfound money to good use and produce a powerful, affordable, and easy to manufacturer vehicle with a battery pack that could outperform most gas guzzlers.  I’m rooting.
